Creating a Company’s Identity

By Jacob Bartholomew, Graphic Designer for Manufacturing-Works

What is a logo? A logo is an image, typography, or both that is used as an identifying symbol of a company, helping to distinguish itself from other similar companies.

Purpose of a logo. The purpose of a logo is to provide a distinctive unique visual identity for a company. A logo is be used on all marketing and advertising material related to a given company. Print media such as letterhead, business cards, brochures, and much more should all have the company’s logo on it. Other media such as web sites, CD’s and DVD’s, trade show booth displays, company shirts and hats, and any thing else related or affiliated with a company should have that company’s logo on it.

Having a successful logo:

  • Once a logo has been chosen, refrain from changing it too often. Remember, the idea of the logo is to help build a visual identity for your company. Changing the logo too often may confuse the public and never allow them to build a familiarity with your company.
  • Make sure your logo is unique and different from any competitor’s logos. A company wants their logo to stand out from its competition.
  • It is important that the look and feel of the logo be related to the company and its products. If the logo is not understandable or portrays a wrong idea of a company to the public, the logo is failing at its job.
  • The logo must be clean and sharp at all times. Stay away from using low resolution copies of the company’s logo.
  • The logo must be practical; a company should be able to use their logo for all means of communication: web sites, print media, T.V., clothing and other merchandise, etc.
